Defeating Flash (Aka Every Photographer's Satan)

Yikes. Looking like a train wreck today? That's okay. I got chu.

Flash photography has to be my biggest enemy of all time. It leaves a trail of terrible photos that can not be retouched or erased. It sucks. Anything with flash on me sucks. My t-zone is shiny. My eyes look squinty (because flash burns my eyes). My face is washed out completely leaving me with my greatest nightmare. A horrible ID picture.

I realized after I took my permit test today that I did not take the precautions necessary to getting the perfect photo. Let's just say it was not up to par. However, these tips and tricks that I will present to you today will make your photogenic levels shoot through the roof.

Let's turn a crappy photo to #goals.

Tip #1:
Mattify everything. Flash photography loves to target the oily people. If you are the kind of girl who likes dewy makeup, forget about everything because dewy is a lie. Flash will target your dewyness and you don't want to see the end result. Powdered minerals will do the trick. Just a quick touch up and you should look great.

Tip #2:
Take your pigments to an extra level. Flash tends to white out half of the pigmentation you have on your face. Go heavy on everything. The blush, the eyeshadows, etc. If you want that flush, you gotta look like a clown to get it. Flash gives no mercy to those who decide to take everything lightly.

Tip #3:
Contour the heck out of your face. I'm not a big fan of contouring, but to combat flash, contour will do the trick. Your face will look super flat with flash if you do not have very chiseled features. So fake it! Take a bronzer and create fake cheekbones and a tall nose. Although flash can ruin a photo, it doesn't know the difference between your fake and real cheekbones. Always stay one step ahead of the flash game.

Tip #4:
Brows on fleek. Your brows are the frame to your eyes and face. A frame has got to be stable and strong. If you want a strong brow game, fill them in. Take a spooly brush and comb through those brows so they look super on fleek. The fleekier, the better.

Tip #5:
Don't be afraid to line those eyes. Eyeliner can really make your eyes pop. With flash taking away most of the color and pigments in your face, nothing is defined. A thick line on your upper lash line will ensure that you still have eyes.

Flash takes no prisoners. Grab your makeup brushes and powder because it's time to fight! Here is the final result with flash photography:

Join my anti flash movement. If you follow these tips, it should reduce half of the problems you get with flash. I can't help you with those satan red eye moments, but I can sure help you take away that shiny t zone. Until next time!

Good Luck,
Em

P.S. I apologize for the change in lighting. I work with natural light for all my photos and today it was cloudy/sunny. Sorry about that!
